Profile
Its personality and complexity results from the climatic conditions, the selection of the best estate grapes and the creativity of our winemaker.
Viticulture
Soils are granite dominated sands. Between elevation and river driven humidity, Dao’s wide diurnal temperature shifts (20o+) ensure both white and red wines are endowed ample natural acidity. Dao wines are renowned throughout Portugal for their ‘freshness.’ Average age of vines: 9 years.
Wine maker
The wine project starts with about 1 hectare of vineyard next to Dão, to kiss the river. Today, the vineyard is 12 years old. The first wine was born in 1999, with grapes bought to join the (very few) that existed. The Lagar de Darei brand is born. In 2003 and after land liberation, another 6 hectares of vineyards were planted, with only Portuguese grape varieties typical of Dão, now with Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Jaen, Alfrocheiro, Encruzado, Malvasia, Bical, Cercial, Verdelho and Arinto. The vines are grown in organic farming.
The wines of 'Casa de Darei' and 'Lagar de Darei' are the pure expression of Dão's terroir that the family wants authentic and true. Wines that do not follow fashions.
